Hands on learning to promote fire safety!

On October 10th, our students had a unique opportunity to learn about fire safety firsthand, thanks to a visit from the Brookhaven Fire Company. As part of this year’s Fire Prevention Week, firefighters brought two fire engines and an ambulance to our campus, creating an exciting hands-on learning experience.

The theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week was “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!” The firefighters stressed the importance of having working smoke alarms in every home, explaining how to maintain them by changing the batteries every six months and replacing the alarms every 10 years, or sooner if they stop working. These simple safety measures were reinforced throughout the day as the students rotated through different learning stations.

For many students, the highlight of the day was getting to explore the ambulance and fire engine. Firefighters opened up the vehicles, giving students an up-close look at the equipment they use during emergencies. Students were eager to climb aboard, sit in the seats, and ask questions about how everything works. Firefighters demonstrated the tools like axes, hoses, ladders and even the jaws of life that they use to fight fires and conduct rescue operations.

The ambulance also drew a lot of interest from students. Paramedics explained the life-saving equipment they carry, and demonstrated some of the techniques they use when responding to medical emergencies. Classes were fascinated by the heart monitor and oxygen tanks. They gained a better understanding of how paramedics provide care in urgent situations. Some even got to sit in the stretcher!

Students were engaged and asked thoughtful questions throughout the day, from how to identify if smoke alarms are working to what it’s like to be a firefighter. It was clear that the firefighters' knowledge and passion made a strong impression on the students, giving them valuable lessons they will carry with them.

Fire Safety Day wasn’t just about learning facts—it was about connecting with members of our local community who dedicate their lives to keeping others safe. The Brookhaven Fire Company’s visit gave our students a firsthand look at what it means to serve others, whether it’s fighting fires or responding to medical emergencies.

We are grateful to the Brookhaven firefighters and paramedics for taking the time to share their knowledge and experience with us!
